The Children's Hospital for Wales

The Children's Hospital is being built on the campus of the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.  This site was chosen as the location for the new children's hospital because of its access to the many specialist clinical and supporting services necessary to provide children with the very best healthcare in the 21st century. The site is also home to the University of Wales College of Medicine, with its teaching and research facilities.

The building work on Phase One of the Children's Hospital for Wales began in April 2003. The hospital admitted its first patients at the end of February 2005 and opened officially on March 1st 2005.

Phase One of the Children's Hospital for Wales brought new, purpose-designed buildings and facilities for children's services. A new main entrance, atrium and reception for children's services; two medical wards with bedside parents' accommodation; family room, parent lounges and playrooms; a children's cancer unit including a ward, day care unit, outpatients and full family accommodation. State of the art surroundings with much use of art, technology and lighting to distract children from pain are key features.   In addition to the capital appeal for building, art programme and equipment the Noah's Ark Appeal will bring nearly £1 million worth of additional projects to the scheme.  The extensive use of interactive art and technology used throughout the hospital will distract children from their pain and distress whilst stimulating their minds, diverting attention from illness and thus aiding the process of physical recovery.

Phase One is a magnificent achievement, but the completion of Phase Two will give us one of the best hospitals in the world.

• Children’s operating theatres
• A new critical care unit – comprising both intensive care and high dependency
• Brand new wards for children needing surgery
• An adolescent ward
