A Really Big Birthday Present

Real Radio breakfast show presenters, Ian and Angela, delivered a very generous gift of a cheque for £77,243 to the Noah’s Ark Appeal as the charity celebrated its sixth birthday at the Children’s Hospital for Wales.

The bubbly breakfast hosts presented a giant gift-wrapped cheque – from the proceeds of the radio station’s ‘Bring a Pound to Work Day’ fundraising event – to Appeal supporter Max Boyce.

“What a tremendous amount of money to raise in just one day; I am overwhelmed by the generosity of people in Wales.  This donation will really make a difference to sick children in Wales,” said the much-loved Welsh entertainer.

On the 4th November 2005 Real Radio listeners were asked to simply ‘bring a pound to work’ to be collected by teams of volunteers who were on the road all day throughout the station’s listening area.  Barclays Bank supported the event by providing free banking and counting facilities on the day as well as doing their own fundraising for the event.

Over 500 companies and schools from across Wales took part in the annual fundraising event last November, raising the highest figure in the event’s history in Wales, for the Teenage Cancer Trust Unit at the Children’s Hospital.

In the six years since it began fundraising, the Noah’s Ark Appeal has raised over £9M to build and equip the first phase of the first children’s hospital in Wales and to fund vital projects at the hospital, including a teenage cancer unit and equipment for a specialist paediatric eye unit.

“Bring a Pound to Work Day is such a simple idea that works so brilliantly.  We’re tremendously grateful to Real Radio for choosing the Noah’s Ark Appeal to benefit from the event and to our wonderful volunteers, who gave up their time to help collect on the day,” said Lyn Jones, Chairman of Trustees of the Noah’s Ark Appeal.
