Darren Day
Darren Day, the star of such musicals as Grease & Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat, was recently one of the contestants in reality TV show "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here".
Darren has added his name to a list of celebrity supporters of The Noah's Ark Appeal, raising money to build the first phase of a Children's Hospital for Wales.
Darren nominated the Appeal to receive the proceeds of his phone votes as a result of his girlfriend Adele's connection to the cause. Adele's brother, also called Darren, died at the age of 11, the victim of a rare disorder known as Sudden Death Syndrome. Because of this tragedy, the cause of a children's hospital for Wales is very important to the family, who are said to be touched by Darren's choice of this charity in memory of their son.
Darren endured the initial week in the Australian rainforest with his fellow participants, who included Christine Hamilton, Tara Palmer Tomkinson and Tony Blackburn. Each night of the second week, the public voted for their favourite to win and the person with the least votes left the show. Every vote raised approximately 15p for charity, with the total votes being shared equally among the surviving contestants each night. Darren fought off the opposition for the first two evenings, but finally left the jungle on the third round of voting having raised the magnificent total of £30,000 to help build the first children's hospital in Wales.
The cheque was received by the Noah's Ark Appeal at the University Hospital of Wales, where the new children's hospital will be built.
Children from Rumney Infants School joined Darren at the hospital with a snake that they had made to remind him of his time in the jungle (as pictured above).
