World Record Attempt - Britannia Rules the Waves!
Chris Morgan and Mick Perrines, resplendent in their paratrooper uniforms, have been given a Capital welcome at City Hall. At a media conference hosted by the leader of Cardiff County Council, Cllr Russell Goodway the pair talked of their experiences on the high seas in front of a rapt audience.
Speaking of their epic voyage, Chris and Mick revealed that they were down to one last army ration of food when they finally hit dry land; another boat crew were reduced to eating raw fish during their voyage after supplies ran out.
Gale force winds almost prevented the soldiers from hitting land at the end of the race and actually capsized their nearest rivals on to rocks where they had to be rescued.
Despite facing death on a number of occasions, including being nearly mowed down by a tuna trawler and facing waves of up to 40ft, Chris and Mick smashed both European and British records and won the 2004 Ocean Rowing Society Atlantic Rowing Regatta (doubles category). The pair also reeled in a magnificent £76,000 for the Noah's Ark Appeal. Well Done Boys!!
Cllr Edward Hancock, Vice Chairman of Rhondda Cynon Taff was also present to welcome Chris who lives in Miskin.
Whilst Chris plans to seek other challenges in the future, Mick cannot wait to get back in a rowing boat and enter the race again – determined to add the world record to the collection.
